INDEPENDENT WRITING TOPICS

INDEPENDENT WRITING TOPICS

LIST OF TOPICS
The Independent Writing topics in the following list may appear in your actual TOEFL iBT. You should become familiar with this list before you take the test. Remember that when you take the test, you will not have a choice of topics. You must write only on the topic that is assigned to you.

It does not matter whether you agree or disagree with the topic. The raters are trained to accept all varieties of opinions. What matters is the overall quality of your writing. This includes the development of your ideas, the organization of your essay, and the quality and accuracy of the language that you use to express your ideas.

What should you do with this list of topics? To prepare for the test, choose topics from the list and practice writing essays in response. Make sure that you time yourself, taking 30 minutes to read the question, plan your work, and write your essay. After completing the essay, read it over and compare it with the scoring guide. Better yet, ask your TOEFL instructor to evaluate your essay against the scoring criteria and give you feedback.
